With its charming Victorian-era architecture, abundance of wineries, dining options and things to do in the area, Kyneton has something for every couple looking to get away. Here is our guide to a 48hr weekend break to Kyneton.

Day 1

Start your weekend break in Kyneton with a stay at one of the area’s charming accommodation options. Kyneton doesn’t really have many hotel options, so you’re largely limited to motels or one of the many holiday home options. Our personal favorites are the newly refurbished Kyneton Springs Motel. This fully refurbished vintage motel is a salute to the classic Californian Road trip. For a more traditional bed and breakfast experience, consider the luxurious Kyneton Manor House or if you’re on a budget try the Central Highlands Motor Inn. See a full overview of accommodation options here.

After you’ve settled in, head out for breakfast at one of Kyneton’s many cafes and restaurants. Historic Piper Street is the go-to place for everything food and drink related. Duck Duck Goose & Larder and Monsieur Piere are local favorites for its delicious pastries, coffee and breakfast dishes, while the Social Foundry on Mollison Street services breakfast with a purpose. The social enterprise provides hands on training for youth facing difficulty in finding employment.

Spend the morning exploring Kyneton’s many local attractions. The Kyneton Museum is a great place to learn about the town’s history, while the Kyneton Botanic Gardens offer a beautiful and peaceful spot for a stroll. For art lovers, the Stockroom Kyneton is a beautiful art gallery showcasing the work of a lot of local artists.

Lunchtime is the perfect opportunity to sample some of the local produce and wine. The Kyneton Farmers Market, held on the first Saturday of the month, is a great place to find fresh and locally grown food, while the Kyneton (and the wider Macedon Ranges wine region) is home to a number of wineries and cellar doors offering tastings and tours.

In the afternoon, pamper yourself with a spa treatment at one of Kyneton’s day spas or stroll over historic piper street for some shopping. KABINETT, is a stunning furniture store located on the ground floor of the previous Royal George Pub. Other options well worth checking out are Red Cart Vintage, Lauriston Press Prints & Drawings Gallery and the HarvestBarn.

Finish your first day in Kyneton with a romantic dinner at one of the town’s many restaurants.Miss M’s Lounge serves stunning cocktails with a tapas style menu, The Spaghetti Bar is an upmarket neighbourhood trattoria and Midnight Starling is one of the best french inspired restaurants in regional Victoria. For something more intimate, consider booking a private chef to come to your accommodation and cook a special meal just for you.

After dinner, wind down with a leisurely evening activity. The Kyneton Town Hall hosts a range of events and performances throughout the year, including concerts, plays, and movies, while a relaxing evening at your accommodation, perhaps with a glass of local wine and a good book, is a great way to end the day.

Day 2

Start your second day in Kyneton with breakfast at one of the town’s many cafes or just pick up a quick sandwich from one of the bakeries on offer.

It is probably now time to discover some of the amazing wineries that the Macedon Ranges wine region has on offer. Most vineyards are between altitudes of 300 and 800 meter above sea level and as such it is a cool climate region. You’ll see this in the stunning Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs that are made in the region with floral notes due to slow ripening during cool autumnal temperatures.

Some of our favourite wineries to visit are Kyneton Ridge, just a 5 minute drive outside of the town of Kyneton with stunning views over the surrounding area. The cellar door provides a great way to sample some of their wine and try some of their pizzas dishes in the onsite restaurant. Other options are ZigZag Road in nearby Lauriston, Granite Hills Winery for amazing Riesling or ShadowFax for stunning Chardonnay.

Enjoy your lunch at one of the wineries or come back to Kyneton pub lunch at The Kyneton Hotel. After lunch you can continue your wine sampling at The Piper Street Wine Company or move over to gin at Animus Distillery. A local gin distillery offering tasting flights with small dishes to sample. If cocktails are more your style, head over to Botanik cocktail bar on the first floor of the former Royal George Hotel. Best cocktails outside of Melbourne with a relaxed atmosphere sitting on the veranda.

Finish your trip to Kyneton with a romantic dinner. Fook Shing is an amazing south-east Asian inspired restaurant, located in a historic gold rush era pub, or try the famous burgers at Major Tom’s or french bistro style at The Oaks Grill on Piper. There are so many options to choose from in Kyneton.
